The Greenbrier Resort

The Greenbrier is an award-winning resort located in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. Since 1778, the Greenbrier's classic architecture, interior design, scenic beauty, and outstanding amenities have hosted distinguished guests including 26 Presidents. The historic resort has a large selection cottages and houses for larger groups and families.  We recently stayed in a three-bedroom South Carolina Row house, originally constructed in the mid-1800s.  Each cottage is now decorated in Dorothy Draper style and features a living room, dining room, fireplace and porch.  Our two older girls shared a room with two double canopy beds (“the princess room”) and our two- year old stayed in the third bedroom in a crib provided by the Greenbrier.

Our cottage was just across the way from the main house, restaurants, spa, indoor pool, fitness and bowling center and a short walk from the green, gazebo and playground.  While the kids were at kids’ club, we enjoyed the spa, a dinner date at Sam Snead’s Tavern, a bike ride around the grounds and our first round of skeet shooting.  Older kids will love the “bunker tour.”  You can visit the former secret U.S. Government Relocation Facility with enough beds for all of Congress. Very James Bond! We all agreed that The Greenbrier deserves every one of those five diamonds.  Nightly rates for Greenbrier cottages begin at $500

I was at the Greenbrier in June 2011 with my husband and 2 daughters to celebrate my father-in-law's 80th birthday. We had a group of 25 family members with kids ranging in age from 5 to 16. It was a really great trip -- zillions of activities for a multigenerational crowd including interesting things like geocaching and falconry alongside tennis, swimming and golf, and plenty of dining options and the beautiful grounds and amazing Dorothy Draper decor. Like the other reviewer, we stayed in the cottages, which were spacious and very comfortable (but the bathrooms were not as modern as I would have expected for the level of the resort and the rooms' cost). The reason I give the resort a low rating for Poshbrood, however, was because we found the services for the under 12 crowd to be remarkably bad. The Adventure Camp was very boring for my girls and, despite promises that they'd have age-appropriate activities, all the activities were geared towards the under 6-year-olds (my girls are 9 and 12). The camp claims they take advantage of all the resort's offerings (rock-climbing, swimming, hiking, croquet) and mix things up day-to-day but all my kids did for a full day was go to two different playgrounds (one was a 30-minute drive away)! Then one night we had a private dinner and hired sitters to take all the kids bowling so they didn't have to listen to the adults chit chat. The sitters couldn't have been more lackluster. They never made it to the bowling alley and then just put the kids in a room to watch TV while they sat in the adjacent living room. They didn't show any initiative or instill confidence. If I had had younger kids, who were still really dependent, I would never have sent them off with those sitters. Additionally, we had some issues with our on-staff event planner and our group meals and the way the Greenbrier responded to our concerns was not adequate at all. I wish I could have written a better review because we loved our time with our family and the occasion was such fun! The resort is beautiful and most of the activities were terrific but the kid-care options are bad and the customer service is not at the level it should be for this level of resort.

We just came back from a 4 day getaway with our 16 month old twins. To be very honest, I was very reluctant to go on this vacation because I didn't think it would be relaxing at all.....running around after our kids in an unfamiliar environment with none of our go-to kids' items....not the idea of a vacation. I was so, so, so wrong! We stayed in a cottage and lucky for us when we checked in the cottage that had been slotted for us wasn't ready so we were put in one that was even closer to the main hotel. The cottage was nicely appointed but what really was a pleasant surprise was just how large it was. The bedroom was quite large and there was a separate living room that was equally large. We never felt cramped with having two cribs either in the bedroom for daytime naps or in the living room where they slept at night. There was also a mini bar area that had a sink and mini-fridge.....big bonus for putting in refrigerated snacks that we bought for the kids. We had arranged ahead of time to use their cribs and while they looked a bit institutional, they were safe and the mattresses looked clean. They were brought over to us shortly after we settled into our cottage. We didn't have to wait around at all...perfect! Actually, most times that we needed something from the resort, it was brought over or arranged in a very timely manner. We never had to wait endlessly for anything. There were plenty of things to do with the kids, swimming in the iindoor pool, walking around the beautiful property, we even found a quiet area near some of the ballrooms where we just let the kids run loose, never an issue as we saw no other people in this area for the hour that we were there. For older children there is a supervised children's club, ice skating rink (seasonal), arcades, bowling alley, indoor tennis courts, laser tag, playgrounds, etc. Since it was very cold outside we weren't able to utilize the playgrounds but I can imagine that it would be fun with other parents and their children also playing. Activities for adults were just as plentiful and varied. We used the hotel's babysitting service several afternoons and all of the evenings. Our babysitter was fantastic, we had the same person the whole time. She was always punctual, super sweet and I trusted her off the bat. While we had arranged for the sitter to come during their daytime naps and after our kids had gone to bed, I think she would have easily handled our kids had they been awake. It's my understanding that all of the sitters are vetted by the resort, background checks are performed, and that they are first-aid certified. Many of the sitters are retired, local school-teachers or had worked at the resort. All very comforting. For adults, there are plenty of dining options from the formal Main Dining Room to resort casual cafes. The food was varied and actually quite good. We were able to get food for the kids from several of the restaurants "to-go" because we found it to be easier to feed them in our cottage. What I found to be the best aspect of the resort was just how accommodating staff were to families with children. We had several minor children vomiting accidents while we were there and the resort quickly laundered jackets, sleep sacks, our crib sheets, etc. and got them back to us in a jiffy. Overall I was incredibly happy we went and can't wait to go back!
