Omni Shoreham Hotel
My husband, son and I recently had the opportunity to visit the Omni Shoreham Hotel, located just off of Connecticut Avenue in the Adams Morgan area of Washington, DC.
Coming in through the city on Memorial Day weekend, we tried to leave early enough to avoid the “Rolling Thunder” motorcycles, but ended up timing it just right to have them escort us through the town. My four year old LOVED talking to the ‘motorcycle men’ at each red light, and talked about it nonstop until we reached the Rock Creek Parkway Bridge, where we got to enjoy one of the few moments of his life where he was at a loss for words.
Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the staff, who valeted our car and carried our luggage to the bellman while we waited for our room to be ready (early check-in is offered, but not necessarily guaranteed).
At check-in, Sam received his “Camp Omni/Omni Kids” backpack full of goodies to keep him entertained, and we couldn’t get him to put it down.
We decided to go grab lunch just up the street on Connecticut Avenue, and found a lovely little place serving organic Italian food. Afterwards, we walked 10-minutes to the National Zoo (entrance is free).
My son couldn’t stop talking about wanting to see the snakes and the pandas. Unfortunately for us, the pandas were napping in their enclosure, so they weren’t to be found, but the snakes were plentiful in the Reptile House.
He didn’t think his day could get any better, but it certainly was about to!
While walking back to the hotel, we received a call that our room was ready and our bags were waiting upstairs for us. After checking into our gorgeous suite, my son couldn’t believe that there were two flat screen televisions (one that he immediately said was just for him). A quick change and we were on our way to the pool.
Wow. The beautiful resort-style pool is definitely unexpected in the middle of the District of Columbia. Polo and Bermuda shorts-clad waitresses serve you at your chairs, with a menu that is enough to satisfy a light appetite and a thirsty palate.
Thankfully, in Sam’s Camp Omni backpack, there was a cute little Frisbee, so he had some toys to play with at the pool, since his parents had forgotten to pack any.
A couple of hours later, when we were finally able to extract him from the pool, we were off to shower and change for dinner.
It was a lovely night, so we dined al fresco at Robert’s Restaurant.
The wait staff couldn’t have been more accommodating, and even though we hadn’t started on the hotel’s scavenger hunt yet, they still let him have his ‘prize’ of Dirt & Worms for dessert (crumbled Oreo cookies layered with chocolate mousse and gummy worms). Mom and Dad enjoyed lovely glasses of wine, gourmet dinners and a fabulous warm bread pudding for dessert. When we arrived back to our room, Sam had a fresh chocolate chip cookie and chocolate milk waiting!
Since he’d just enjoyed his Dirt and Worms, we decided to wait to eat those on the ride home.
After a wonderful night’s sleep on crisp white sheets, we woke to complimentary coffee for two delivered to our door. A jolt of caffeine later, we were ready to start the day back at Robert’s where the breakfast buffet is to die for.
Then it was time for the scavenger hunt, which included a trip to the concierge, a visit to the Wildlife Observation area, and a swing by the valet and the snack shop, with prizes awarded at each stop. Sam couldn’t believe how lucky he was to get ‘all those presents!’ A quick swim before we checked out served to complete our unbelievable weekend staycation.
The historic, luxurious, family-friendly, and even pet-friendly, Omni Shoreham Hotel is a fantastic place to enjoy Washington DC. You may not even believe you’re staying right in the heart of the District.
Rates start at $189 a night. Children under 17 stay for free in parents room.
