Omni Berkshire Place Hotel
Wow! We recently spent a night in the renovated Omni Berkshire Place hotel in New York. The hotel is conveniently located on East 52nd Street at Madison Avenue which is an amazing location for families. Step outside the hotel's front door and you're within walking distance of Broadway, Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue and Rockefeller Center. MOMA and Radio City Music Hall are two blocks away and Central Park just eight blocks away.
We slogged through the rain to the hotel after taking the subway from Penn Station and were warmly greeted by friendly staff. The lobby is understated and did not indicate the awesomeness that was our suite. We were in a Madison Suite that overlooked 52nd Street and was a whopping 781-square-feet! The room featured a foyer, a large master bedroom with an oversized bath and a separate living area with small dining table, a sofa bed and stereo system.
All the rooms have just been totally redone with mahogany woods, contemporary art, designer lighting, fine linens an a beautiful Sycamore built in feature wall with a 37 inch flat panel TV. The rooms are sophisticated and chic -- they are neutral in color with pops of citrus. (I even asked the manager for the wall color, and he was kind enough to share. It's Sherwin Williams' Realistic Beige.) The suite felt like my own Upper East Side pied a terre. The rooms were gorgeous but not the kind of gorgeous where you're terrified the kids are going to ruin something or break a vase. Poshbrood gives mad props for the way each Omni is furnished and decorated differently and uniquely to the specific property. There is no "hotel" decor formula for Omni (you know what I'm talking about, you visit Hotel X in Kansas City, Tennessee and Rhode Island and they're carbon copies of each other.) Each Omni we've visited has been diverse and it's clear that much care and attention went into the interior design.
We were weary and had an early appointment in the morning, so opted to meet a friend for drinks and dinner in Fireside, the hotel's restaurant near the lobby. I noticed earlier that the resto and bar were packed but it didn't prepare me for the ridiculously yummy meal we had that evening. The restaurant's theme is a contemporary spin on classic comfort foods. We loved the menu right away and agreed to share several "Conversation Pieces." Where to begin? We shared in rapid succession, the Middle East Chopped Salad (served in lettuce cups so you can eat with your hands), Lobster Rolls, Philly Cheesesteak Dumplings, Surf Tacos (catfish) and Mini Burgers.
Our family goes to Maine every August and I SWEAR Fireside's Lobster Roll was the best I've ever had. All of our shared plates were amazing and we stuffed our faces in stunned silence. This is no hotel restaurant, it's a comfort food lover's culinary dream. We saved just a smidge of room to share the Fireside S'mores but next time I'll try the Mini Ice Cream Sandwiches with PB&J ice cream. The sliders and finger foods on the menu are perfect for younger diners but just in case, Fireside also has a dedicated Kids Menu that includes "Grilled Cheese (Crust Not Included)", Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken Bites and other offerings for your littles. That night, I took a bath in a gargantuan tub (separate from our marble shower) and slept like the dead in our luxury linens. Although I had the best intentions to get up early and hit the hotel gym, I hit snooze instead. (PS great blackout shades = a must when traveling with children.)
The Omni Berkshire Place offers the Sensational Kids program which provides four-diamond service to the hotel's littlest guests. Children will enjoy plenty of kid-minded amenities, including suitcases filled with games and books, a backpack upon check-in and a list of top family attractions in New York City.
Bottom line: We're totally smitten and can't wait to go back. (American Girl Dream Package, anyone?)
Starting rates for a deluxe room is $229 a night and $439 a night for a Madison Suite. (Quite a deal for 781 square feet and a family of four.) Check the hotel's website for specials and packages.
PS Your family pup can join you at the Omni for a fee, providing he or she weighs $25 pounds or less.
