Inn at Perry Cabin

Desperate for a weekend away, we checked into this gorgeous (and I mean gorgeous) inn located right on the water in St. Michaels Maryland.  We brought a newborn and 2 year old and it could not have been more perfect—it was totally relaxing, completely manageable with little ones, and a really quick hour drive from DC.

The Inn (which you will probably recognize from The Wedding Crashers) is part of Orient-Express and it made up of the main manor house built in the 1800s, newer buildings, and a truly breathtaking piece of land on the water—it’s quintessential Chesapeake Bay.

We stayed in a Master Suite on the first floor which was ideal. Not only was it gorgeous, with a huge bathroom and tub that I could not get enough of, but it had French doors separating the bedroom from the sitting room so we could put the kids down early then have a glass of wine by the fire without having to be totally silent, and it had direct access to the grounds so the two year old could be occupied by going in and out the whole time. We brought pack n plays but for a fee can you have cots and cribs brought in (you can also have your pet stay for $100!)

We want to go back again with the extended family, grandparents and get everyone to get rooms on the same porch or in the same building. It would also be the perfect spot to get a group of friends and their kids to go for a night away. The staff was really friendly and very understanding of little ones—they actually offered to walk the baby around when he was fussy and offered to take a couple family snapshots for us.

The Inn is:  Just. So. Pretty. with so many great spots to sit and look at gorgeous views, that you could conceivably do nothing at all.

But you have to book at least one treatment at the Linden Spa, which is one of the best spas I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a lot). The waiting room alone is worth the trip—take time to stay in this one with big chairs, comfy throws, and a huge window into a private garden.

They have a heated pool that luckily opens at 7 am so kids can jump right in and there’s plenty of lounging for parents. They’ve also got free bikes by the front door that you can check out and ride around the property anytime.

Really little kids will be happy with walks along the dock and running around on the lawn, but bigger ones –and grown-ups-- will want you to  sign up for boat rides, sailing lessons, and crabbing expeditions that the Inn arranges (there is a somewhat substantial fee for these water activities but I’d say it’s worth it because when else will you go crabbing and it beats the coast of chartering a boat on your own).

For dinner we headed to the Inn’s restaurant, Sherwood’s Landing, which was really good and def a step above with Chesapeake Bay classics, obviously heavy on the seafood. The vibe was elegant but laid back and it was fine bringing the kids, but if you can, leave them with a sitter in the room and just go with the grown ups.

The one drawback was they are so strict about their bar’s underage policy that they wouldn’t let us go in there for a drink with out 5 month old who was asleep and obviously wouldn’t be drinking and the bar was empty.  Duh??!
But we got over it because sitting in the drawing rooms off the lobby and sipping on the free cider and tea was just as much if not more fun. (Note: the Inn is obviously amazing in warmer weather since you can really take advantage of the water, but it is also a hit in the winter because it’s totally cozy with comfy sofas everywhere, lovely holiday decorations in December, and fire places all over).

If you leave the property, you can easily walk into town where there a few cute little stores and restaurants (there’s one pizza spot that is a great lunch option and a to-die-for bakery right down the street).

Walk over to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and check out all the old buildings that make up the complex and bring lots of coins because they have gumball machines on their dock that dispense bird seed so kiddos can feed the ducks to their hearts delight.
