Craving Solitude? Try the Scottish Highlands!

Although we here at Poshbrood mostly focus on family-friendly travel, we know that sometimes you need to take some time for yourself. If a little time away sounds good right about now, we suggest the Scottish Highlands as your next destination.

While there are activities for kids—mostly Loch Ness Monster related—for the grown-ups, there are grand historic vistas to enjoy, luxurious hotels to experience and some very fine Scotch to drink!

The Highlands are the home of Britain’s largest national park, Cairngorms National Park. The park is full of mountains, forest paths, rivers, lochs, wildlife hotspots, friendly villages and distilleries(!). Take a nice hike, visit the distillery—sounds good to me! There’s also skiing and rock climbing in case you’re feeling athletic.

The weather and mood in the Highlands skews romantic, but there is a dark side. The “Highland of the Clans” describes a time when violence was common in the Highlands. Some of the more famous are the stories of William Wallace and Rob Roy McGregor, but there are many more just waiting to be heard. If you’re a history lover, you won’t run out of fascinating places to explore.

Wondering where to stay? No matter what you’re after, you can find it in the Highlands. Hotels are plentiful, but if you want to try outside the box, this is your opportunity! Whether you’re in the mood for a comfortable cottage, a quaint bed and breakfast or something a little bit crazy like a working farm where you can immerse yourself in the culture and heritage of the Highlands, you’ll find it all!
